The painting is of a prominent hillside in Carmel, California. It's the first sight seen from during down the Pacific Coast Highway into town. The Carmel River winds though the valley and pours into the Pacific Ocean. This view captures the iconic hillside, locally called "Palo Corona", above the last of the winding river before it merges into the ocean
